Language skills || Basis of writing and communication Required competencies for language knowledge
Language plays an important role in education. It is very difficult to get education without a language. Language is the medium of instruction. By acquiring linguistic skills, children studying at the primary level acquire a grasp of the language and begin to learn and understand other subjects.
Language has 4 basic competencies.
(1) listening.
(2) Speaking.
(3) Reading.
(4) Writing.
In addition there are other important competencies.
(5) Realization of ideas.
(6) Practical Grammar.
(7) Self-learning- use of simple pictures, dictionary.
(8) Language use - etiquette, politeness.
(9) Dictionary - Starting with 1500 words at the primary level, knowledge of about 5000 words should be understood and their meaning should be understood.
Basics of Writing and Expression Communication
Language writing and expressions are the basis of communication - 'letters', 'words', and 'sentences'. Children gradually learn about the formation of 'letters', 'words' and 'sentences' respectively at the primary stage. Whatever children say or express their expressions, it is the letters, words and sentences that play the role of writing them.
Required competencies for language knowledge
(1) Attention to pronunciation and writing.
(2) Word Comprehension, Syntax.
(3) Composition skills.
(4) Ability to express.
(5) Understanding what is heard and saying it in your own words.
(6) Proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing language skills.
(7) Creativity.
(8) Interest in literature.
(9) Having virtues (moral values).
(10) Proficiency in practical life.
Important things to teach a language -
(i) The teacher should have a simple and attractive mind.
(ii) The child should be attracted towards the teacher.
(iii) Fear, despair or anxiety should not be contained in the child.
(iv) Children should be given opportunity to express themselves.
(v) Children should be kept active as much as possible.
(vi) The teacher should encourage and praise the children.
(vii) All children should get the opportunity to participate in sports and activities.
(viii) Speech-impaired children should be encouraged and supported while speaking. They should coordinate with other children. Special care should be taken not to tease other children such children.
(ix) The teacher should be emotionally controlled by himself.
(ix) Children at the primary stage should not be subjected to strict discipline because children feel such bondage which affects their learning.
(xi) The teacher should behave friendly with the children.
(xii) The teacher should have knowledge of the mother tongue of the children so that the teacher can understand the feelings of the children well.
(xiii) The emphasis should be on teaching in the school through children's meetings, puzzles, antakshari, rhymes, conversation etc.
(xiv) Do activity based learning in the classroom.
(xv) Ensure everyone's participation in the class.
(xvi) More emphasis should be given on correct pronunciation, writing.
(xvii) Children should also be given an opportunity to write on the blackboard.
(xvii) Knowledge of grammar must be given.
(xix) Emphasis is given on the use of standard English words.
(xx) Encourage children to take up activities like storytelling, conversation, singing poetry/song etc. for free expression and writing.
Language learning and language improvement of children
We often see that children initially learn language by imitation but speak in standard language with words from their mother tongue or are unable to speak complete sentences. The teacher is required to make corrections in the sentences or words spoken by the student. Gradually the child learns to speak pure language by improving the words of the language. They can be gradually improved by the teacher by practicing them.
